The Rich History of Shelly Beach

Shelly Beach is much more than just a scenic escape; it boasts a vibrant past rooted in early industry, local hospitality, and wartime defense.

Industry & The Shell-Grit Trade

Building Brisbane: The beach’s abundant shell-grit was a valuable commodity. It was harvested and transported by barge to Brisbane, where it was used to create the foundational mortar for the growing city’s early buildings.
Maritime Roots: This trade cemented Shelly Beach’s early reputation as a notable shipping hub on the Sunshine Coast.

Caloundra’s First Hotels

The 1885 Pioneer: Shelly Beach was the proud site of Caloundra’s very first hotel, established at the south end of the beach at the corner of Alfred Street and Victoria Terrace.
A Change of Scenery: The location eventually proved too isolated from the main town center, which gravitated toward the more protected waters of Kings Beach.
The Hotel Francis (1906): The original hotel was later replaced by the Hotel Francis on Albert Street. It quickly evolved into a beloved landmark and the primary social hub for the local community.
